Former NC state senator files for bankruptcy

Julia Boseman, a former state senator in North Carolina, recently filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

Boseman's filing lists mostly consumer debt, according to the StarNews of Wilmington. The total amount she owes to unsecured creditors was listed at $1.756 million, and she claims to have $47,346 in assets.

Boseman also listed a mortgage debt of $735,000, and a debt owed to BB&T Bankruptcy Department of $565,000. There are a total of more than 20 creditors listed on Boseman's filing, according to The Associated Press.

The latter debt has Boseman's former partner, Melissa Jarrell, listed as a co-debtor. The mortgage debt lists her current partner, Chrystal Medlin, as a co-debtor, the news provider reports.

"She’s just filing for the purpose of getting a fresh start and moving forward," Boseman's bankruptcy attorney explained.

Boseman was the first openly gay member of the North Carolina General Assembly, the AP reports. She reportedly finished her sixth year of service in the state Senate last month.
