Real Estate 101. In California, a married couple has the choice of buying a property and choose the option of joint tenancy. In that way the surviving partner inherits the deceased interest (right of survivorship) in the real estate property and is NOT liable for any of the deceased's debt. I am sure MJ had the best legal counsel money could buy to find loopholes and protect his assets/debts. No wonder he kept piling up debt and getting away with it. Something most of us would not be able to achieve without proper counsel.

Sadly, he is the latest visible figure in the world that is living with debt that would have been difficult to repay. So many of us do that on a smaller scale.
