Start by reading your credit report.

You credit report is an electronic record of your financial activities. The report covers everything from borrowing to buy a car or a home to applying for a loan or credit card. Every time you may apply for a credit card or other loan, it is registered as an inquiry on your credit report.

A credit report is a record of how you use credit and how much of it you have available. If you're late in making a monthly payment, that will also appear on your report. Any time a lender is evaluating your loan request or a credit card company is considering whether to give you a credit card, you may count on an evaluation of your credit report to influence the decision.

If you are working on your financial management skills, you should review a copy of your credit report from each of the three major bureaus. Many financial professionals suggest you review your credit at least once a year. In addition, credit bureaus and other credit-report services sell annual subscriptions, often in the $50 to $100 range, that keep you informed of any and all activities in your credit report.

If you are denied credit for reasons based on the content of your credit report, you have the right under the Fair Credit Reporting Act to receive a free credit report from the issuing credit bureau within 60 days of receiving a credit denial notice.
