Put Massachusetts state exemption laws to work for you

Our lawyers will provide you with a free initial consultation to help you understand the magnitude of the problems facing you. They are experienced in state as well as federal law and should explain all of your rights and options. They may also prepare your petition by selecting the best approach to meet your specific needs.

Here are a few of the exemptions that may be available to you:

Homestead: Up to $500,000 exemption for land and buildings.

Wages: 75 percent of earnings are exempt.

Automobiles: One automobile up to $700 in value.

Other Property: 100 percent of wearing apparel, beds and bedding; $3,000 in household furniture; bibles, and books not exceeding $200 in value; $500 in tools, implements and fixtures and $500 in materials and stock necessary for carrying on trade or business; boats, fishing tackle and nets not exceeding $500; and $125 of cash, savings or other deposits in a banking institution.

You may get fast relief the minute you file.

When your lawyer files a Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 petition, the court should issue an "Automatic Stay" order. This will prohibit any further action by your creditors to collect their debts from you. You won't have to worry about repossession of your car or foreclosure on your home. You shouldn't be able to discharge your student loans in a Chapter 7, but you may include them in your Chapter 13 repayment plan and repay them over time.
