Tens of thousands of people who receive health care from the University of California at Berkeley have had their personal information stolen by overseas hackers. The UC Berkeley server was reportedly breached in October of 2008 and attacks continued until this past April. Included in the breached data are Social Security numbers as well as medical information of former students, their families, and about 3,400 students of Mills College eligible to receive health care from the university.
In Virginia, millions of electronic prescription records were stolen from the state’s drug monitoring system. The extent of the April 30th breach continues to be assessed. The system is set up to allow doctors and pharmacists statewide to monitor prescriptions for the most powerful painkillers and narcotics. Stolen data included patient names, birth dates, addresses, as well as names and dates of prescriptions.
A laptop containing the financial information of University of North Dakota donors was stolen last year in Charleston. Last week it was revealed that the total number of people affected is 84,000. The missing laptop belonged to a third-party company handling all information of the UND foundation and alumni association.
On June 4, 2009, a mobile data device was stolen from a counselor’s office in the college’s Skills to Employment facility. Although the device was returned less than three hours later after police were called, leaked data included names, Social Security numbers for some people in the PROMISE JOBS program, as well as business contact information for participating employers. PROMISE JOBS is Iowa’s welfare-reform program.
