Mass Layoffs for the Northeast Region

The Northeast Region is split into two divisions, the New England Division (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont) and the Middle Atlantic Division (New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania). As a whole the Northeast Region reports the lowest number of mass layoff events and the lowest number of initial claims. For instance, in March of 2007, the Northeast Region posted only 14,613 new unemployment claims due to mass layoffs, as compared to 41,139 in the West, 34,812 in the South, and 33,410 in the Midwest

Again in August 2007, the Northeast reported the fewest initial claims of any of the four regions-16,396. Though all four regions saw an increase in initial claimants over the past 12 months, the Northeast region had the second smallest increase, with 1,890 more than last year.

Despite the Northeast’s overall lower levels of mass layoff claims, the state of New York had the second largest number of mass layoff-related claims of an individual state for the month of August, with 8,776.  New York also had the fourth-greatest over-the-year increase in initial claims of all the states.
